CNG CARS, THE CARS OF THE FUTURE

What is CNG?
CNG is an abbreviation for compressed natural gas. Natural gas which is mostly methane is compressed to a pressure of about 3000 psi (21 MPa) or higher to reduce volume and to transport more efficiently. It is also much cheaper than gasoline.

Use of CNG is spreading fast.
More People are using CNG for cars, taxis and buses. It is fast replacing petrol and diesel in many large cities around the world. It is also much cleaner burning than petrol and diesel. The end products of combustion being almost entirely carbon dioxide and water vapor, hence greatly reducing smog.

Advantages of Using CNG :
  • Much cheaper than gasoline. Only about 1/3 the price of gasoline in some cases. Prices vary from state to state. Generally cheaper than gasoline

  • Environmentally safer. Far less polluting than gasoline. Combustion results in CO2 and H2O only. No nitrous and sulfur compounds emitted which lead to acid rain

  • Widely available in many big cities around the world. Taxi drivers prefer to use CNG to gasoline because of its lower cost

Disadvantages of Using CNG :
  • Not readily available in many places. However, the use is increasing rapidly

  • Parts for maintenance not available readily in far out areas

  • Uneducated Users. Users not aware of CNG and how to fill up the tank

  • Converted car engines may be damaged during use. Gasoline engines converted to run on CNG may not last long. The hot H2O in the form of steam can ruin some engines. But engines made for CNG do not face the same problem
